Data Analysis on 2017 Annual Non-Compliant Imported Food

In recent years demand for imported food has grown significantly in China. According to data released by China AQSIQ, there were 6624 batches of food rejected during 2017, more than double the amount seen in 2016 (3031 batches). Altogether over 52 thousand tons of food were returned or destroyed. Non-compliance mainly involved beverage, pastry & biscuit, candy products, grain & grain products, and wine. Welcoming China’s new State Administration for Market Regulation

We are beginning to see the dust settle from China’s two sessions this past March as the revelations of China State Council’s institutional reforms begin to take shape. Past midnight on April 10th China’s newly formed State Administration for Market Regulation officially unveiled its placard outside offices in Beijing. Reforms ratified at the two sessions are underway. Now that SAMR’s director general Zhang Mao and head party secretary Bi Jingquan have put up their open for business sign they are tasked to formally overhaul and report the new authority’s responsibilities and functions. A timetable for this has been published and review of the administration’s responsibilities is to be due by June 20th and official implementation by September of this year. Fujian Province Implements New Food Traceability System

Takehome Fujian Province will implement a traceability system for 11 food categories including grains, livestock and poultry, vegetables, and others. On March 1st, “Administrative Measures for Fujian Food Safety Information Traceability”entered into force. According to this regulation, Fujian Province will adopt a traceability management system for 11 different food categories. Deep Structural Changes Planned for China’s Food Administration

Takehome China decided to reform the structure of its State Council and ministerial level departments, abolishing CFDA, AQSIQ, SAIC, NHFPC and MOA and creating new bodies. China CNCA Clarifies Registration Renewal Requirements for Overseas Infant Formula Manufacturers

China Proposes Increase in Tariffs on US Products

Takehome: China proposes to increase tariffs on American products to protect its trade interests. Fruit, wine, and meat are all targets. On Mar. 23, 2018, China Ministry of Commerce announced a proposed tariff increase on American products in response to a recent increase in tariffs made by the US on Chinese steel and aluminum products.
