Prothioconazole\’s Promising Future: EU Renewal Assessment Finds No Evidence of Endocrine Disrupting Effects

Prothioconazole, a broad-spectrum triazolinthione class of fungicides developed by Bayer and launched in 2004, features such advantages as broad-spectrum fungicidal activity, good systemic activity, high protective, curative and eradicative activity, and long effective period, with prominent control effect on wheat head blight. However, like other triazole pesticides, the potential endocrine disrupting effect of prothioconazole and its metabolite prothioconazole-desthio has been of great concern globally and is the key item to be assessed in the pesticide registration process. According to the recently disclosed result of the EU periodic renewal assessment of prothioconazole, for which Bayer is the lead applicant, it is initially concluded that prothioconazole does not meet the endocrine disruptor (ED) criteria. History of the EU Renewal Assessment of Prothioconazole The renewal assessment process began in February 2018, with the UK as the Rapporteur Member State (RMS) completing the initial draft renewal assessment report (dRAR). Due to the UK’s exit…

Chinese Pesticide Registration Made Easy: A Step-by-Step Guide for Successful Registration

Pesticides are essential substances used in agriculture and forestry to prevent or control the spread of diseases, insects, weeds, rodents, and other harmful organisms. They regulate plant growth and insect behavior, helping to maintain the integrity of crops and forests. However, the use of pesticides also carries potential risks and hazards to human health and the environment. Therefore, China implements a rigorous pesticide registration management system. Under the Regulation on the Administration of Pesticide, all pesticides are required to be registered before they can be produced, sold, or used. To help companies navigate the complex and demanding process of pesticide registration in China, REACH24H launched a step-by-step guide for successful pesticide registration in China. This guide aims to address three main questions: What are the requirements for applicants? Before applying for pesticide registration, what preparations are required? What is the application process? The registration process is divided into five stages,…

EPA Proposes Registration of Chlormequat Chloride for First Food Uses

In April 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed the registration of chlormequat chloride for the first food uses to provide farmers with an additional tool to help increase crop yield. Before registering these uses, EPA will establish tolerances in or on barley, oat, triticale, and wheat. What is Chlormequat Chloride? Chlormequat chloride is currently registered for use as a plant growth regulator (PGR) in ornamentals grown in greenhouses and nurseries. As a PGR, chlormequat chloride application decreases the height of the grain plant stem, resulting in reduced lodging and potentially increased grain yield. Compared to other PGRs with similar use patterns, chlormequat allows for more flexibility in application timing, resulting in greater ease of use for small grain producers. Is Chlormequat Chloride Safe for Human Health and the Environment? However, before issuing this proposed registration decision, EPA assessed whether exposures to this product would cause unreasonable adverse effects…

China\’s Agrochemical Institute Opens Technical Mailbox for Pesticide Registration

On March 11, 2023, the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas of China (ICAMA) published a notice to announce the opening of a new technical consultation mailbox (yjsfw@agri.gov.cn). This service enables enterprises to seek guidance on technical problems encountered during the pesticide registration process, including issues related to registration tests and registration test organizations. This is a positive development for enterprises seeking to register pesticides in the country. This new service provides a valuable opportunity for enterprises to seek guidance on uncertain contents related to pesticide registration, which can help them obtain pesticide registration certificates more efficiently. What is the New Technical Consultation Mailbox for? In accordance with the State Council\’s requirements to streamline the government and improve services, the ICAMA has decided to launch this initiative to enhance the quality and level of service offered to pesticide registration informants and registration…

U.S. EPA Updates Pesticide Registration Review Schedule

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released an updated registration review schedule for the next three years. This schedule provides stakeholders with a roadmap and advance notice of actions, reflecting the four-year extension for the registration review deadline provided in the FY 2023 budget. The deadline for completion of registration review final decisions is now October 1, 2026, for pesticides registered before October 1, 2007. Importance of Registration Review The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) requires EPA to review each registered pesticide at least once every fifteen years to ensure it can still be used without unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment. EPA completes draft risk assessments, proposed interim decisions/final decisions, and interim/final decisions during this review process. The registration review process also requires compliance with the Endangered Species Act. Changes in the Updated Schedule The updated registration review schedule reflects some of the broader policies that the EPA is pursuing, including its Endangered Species Act…

EPA Releases Final Biological Evaluation Report on Sulfoxaflor\’s Effects on Endangered Species and Their Habitats

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the final biological evaluation(BE) report , along with its response to comments received on the draft BE, for sulfoxaflor. Sulfoxaflor: A Newer Alternative to Older Insecticides Sulfoxaflor is an insecticide that is commonly used on various crops to target difficult pests, such as aphids and tarnished plant bugs. As a newer alternative to older insecticides, including carbamates, neonicotinoids, organophosphates, and pyrethroids, sulfoxaflor requires fewer applications, resulting in less exposure to non-target pests and plants. Report Evaluates Potential Effects of Sulfoxaflor on Endangered and Threatened Species and Their Habitats The final BE report evaluates the potential effects of sulfoxaflor on federally listed endangered and threatened species and their designated critical habitats. The report also considers whether sulfoxaflor is likely to jeopardize endangered and threatened species or adversely modify designated critical habitats. The release of this report supports EPA\’s efforts to meet its obligations under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), as outlined in…
