General Food with Function Claims in South Korea

Background

According to MFDS, the health food market is boosting in South Korea. From 2015 to 2019, the market volume has been raised from less than 2 billion dollars to more than 3 billion dollars, with an average growth rate of 13.7%.

The aging population also accelerates the growth of the health market. During Covid-19, the demand amongst Korean consumers for health functional foods blew up in popularity. As per Statista\’s report, the sales of health functional products skyrocketed by 579% from January 27 to February 11, 2020. The sales of vitamin products grew by over 2,000% compared to the previous year.

However, developing a health functional food is labor-intensive and time-consuming in South Korea. It might cost up to 10 billion (about 850 thousand dollars) and as long as seven years, which holds back most food enterprises from entering the health food industry in South Korea.

To promote the health food market and help more firms selling health food in South Korea easily, Korean competent authority brought out a new regulation allowing general food to label health claims. ChemLinked webinar “General Food with Function Claims in South Korea” will deeply interpret the new regulation and analyze further opportunities.
