Bio-Based Product Certification: What It Is and Why It Matters

As the world increasingly embraces sustainable development, the urgency to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, curb carbon emissions, and transition to renewable resources has reached an all-time high. Within this global movement, bio-based products are emerging as a crucial force. Moreover, bio-based product certification can not only assure consumers of the product’s eco-friendly attributes but also help businesses tap into the growing market of environmentally conscious buyers.

What Are Bio-Based Products?

Bio-based products are materials that are wholly or partially made from biomass—organic matter derived from living organisms such as plants, animals, microorganisms, and enzymes.

Bio-based solutions are now used across a wide range of sectors:

  • Packaging: Food containers, shopping bags
  • Textiles: Clothing, home fabrics
  • Automotive: Coatings, interior parts, lubricants
  • Electronics: Casings, circuit boards
  • Agriculture: Mulch films, pesticides
  • Construction: Paints, composites, insulation
  • Personal care: Skin products, cleaning agents
  • Energy: Biofuels, bioelectricity

Biomass examples include agricultural waste, wood residues, and even animal manure.

What Is Bio-Based Certification?

Bio-based certification is a rigorous process that verifies the bio-based content of a product. It entails third-party testing and evaluation to ensure that the bio-based components in a product meet stringent, specific standards.

Why Get Certified?

  • Gain Competitive Edge
  • Meet global sustainability standards
  • Appeal to environmentally conscious buyers
  • Contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Currently, there are several widely recognized biobased certification labels and programs around the world, including the USDA Certified Biobased Label, UL 9798 Biobased Content Validation, DIN-Geprüft Biobased Certification from Germany, and TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK biobased Certification.

Bio-Based Certification Process (Example: USDA)

Each certification body has its own process, but here’s an overview of how USDA BioPreferred® certification typically works:

Step 1: Application

  • Create an online account
  • Sign the participation agreement
  • Submit product documentation
  • Receive the application number

Step 2: Testing

  • Contact an approved lab
  • Submit product samples
  • Receive test results

Step 3: Certification

  • Use the USDA label
  • Undergo periodic reviews
  • Notify USDA of any product/formula changes

Testing is only valid after receiving an application number from the USDA. Testing done beforehand is not eligible for certification use.
