The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently published peer-reviewed conclusions on the risk assessments of two pesticide active substances, Triclopyr and its variant Triclopyr-butotyl, and 1-Methylcyclopropene. Additionally, EFSA has launched a public consultation on the dossier for the renewal of Pinoxaden.

EU Releases Risk Assessment Conclusions for Triclopyr

On 17 July 2024, EFSA approved the peer review of the pesticide active substance Triclopyr and its variant Triclopyr-butotyl, and published on 12 August 2024. This assessment was carried out with Poland as the rapporteur Member State and Hungary as the co-rapporteur Member State. The review focused on the use of this herbicide in established pastures and non-recreational grasslands and evaluated its maximum residue levels (MRLs) in rice. According to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 844/2012 and its amendment (EU) No 2018/1659, the review identified reliable endpoints suitable for regulatory risk assessment but also highlighted critical missing information, raising concerns about its safety and efficacy.

EU Releases Risk Assessment Conclusions for 1-Methylcyclopropene

On 19 July 2024, EFSA also approved the risk assessment for 1-Methylcyclopropene and published on 16 August 2024, with the Netherlands as the rapporteur Member State. This assessment, conducted under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, focused on amending the approval conditions. Currently, 1-Methylcyclopropene is only approved for post-harvest storage in sealed warehouses. However, the applicant AgroFresh Holding France SAS aims to extend its use to pre-harvest applications on outdoor crops, specifically pome fruits via spray application. EFSA’s conclusions identified reliable endpoints for regulatory risk assessment but also emphasized missing information and potential issues that require further evaluation.

Pinoxaden Renewal Dossier Enters Public Consultation

In another significant move, EFSA has initiated a public consultation on the renewal dossier for Pinoxaden. Syngenta Crop Protection AG has submitted relevant studies and scientific data for the renewal application. The relevance and compliance of these data will be reviewed by the rapporteur Member State and co-rapporteur Member State during the preparation of the assessment report. The public can access the IUCLID dossier (dossier UUID: e6002b51-2978-457b-9f9b-81fc379c992a) online and submit comments by the specified deadline. This consultation aims to identify additional relevant scientific data and information to ensure a comprehensive and transparent evaluation process. It started on 19 August 2024 and will end on 18 October 2024.
