When applying for an INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) name, the applicant should collect relevant documents based on the type of ingredient and submit the application through the PCPC (Personal Care Products Council) website. The typical review period is approximately 3 to 6 months.

The application process for an INCI name is illustrated below:

INCI Name application workflow

Applicants must gather comprehensive information, including the ingredient’s trade name, molecular formula, CAS number, structural formula, Latin name, composition, intended use, production process, and purity information.

The INC (International Nomenclature Committee) usually holds meetings in February, April, June, September, and November. Applicants are required to submit their INCI name applications  6 to 8 weeks before the scheduled meeting via the PCPC website. The assignment of an INCI name and the drafting of the corresponding monograph are generally completed within about one month after the INC meeting concludes.

In the final assignment, each ingredient is assigned one unique INCI name.

If the applicant disagrees with the assigned INCI name, they may prepare additional supporting documents and submit a request for name revision to the PCPC. The revision request will then be reviewed at the next INC meeting.
